Description
This lesson will put together what you've learned in previous lessons and put it together into a plan to optimize your first year in Toastmasters, with these overall goals:
- Achieving Level 3 in the Pathway of your choice
- Becoming skilled and confident at filling all meeting roles
- Creating a vision & mission for your self-development plans
- Developing a bank of content to use
1. Month 1
You've just joined your Toastmasters club. This month will focus on setting yourself up for future success.
- Toastmasters International (TI):
- Make sure the officers register you correctly with TI. You should receive mail with your account information.
- Get your TI login setup. Put this login information into a program like KeePass.
- Edit your TI profile as needed (address, phone numbers, e-mail addresses).
- Bookmark the Toastmasters website (you may want to create a bookmarks folder for Toastmasters-related sites).
- Take the Pathways survey and choose your first path.
- Your club's websites:
- Easy Speak - make sure you bookmark the URL. Edit your profile as needed (address, phone numbers, e-mail address).
- Free Toast Host - make sure you bookmark the URL. Edit your profile as needed (address, phone numbers, e-mail address).
- Begin creating your Toastmasters binder.
- Sign up for your first project to do next month - ask the VPE.
- Ask the VPE for a mentor or accountability buddy.
- Study the beginner roles section in the RDG TM Meetings program. You should volunteer for one of these roles if needed.
2. Month 2
In month 2, your big task is to deliver your first prepared speech project.
- Continue to fill beginner roles as available.
- Work with your mentor/accountability buddy to deliver your first project.
- Take some time to write out speech topic ideas. You can use the worksheets in the speaker resources to help.
- Choose a committee to join (education, membership, or public relations).
- Schedule your second project for next month.
3. Month 3
Now that your first project is done, it's time to continue to #2.
- Continue to fill beginner roles as available.
- Work with your mentor/accountability buddy to complete your second project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
4. Month 4
In addition to your third project, it's time to move up to intermediate roles.
- Study the intermediate roles in the RDG Meetings program and begin volunteering for them.
- Work with your mentor/accountability buddy to complete your third project.
- Update your speech topic & idea list.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
5. Month 5
Now that you've reached Level 1 in Pathways, it's time to continue to Level 2.
- Continue volunteering for beginner & intermediate meeting roles.
- Work with your mentor/accountability buddy to complete your fourth project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
6. Month 6
Halfway into the year, and you're almost to level 2.
- Continue volunteering for beginner & intermediate meeting roles.
- Work with your mentor/accountability buddy to complete your fifth project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
7. Month 7
You should be ready to take on advanced roles in your club by now. This month will also have you complete Level 2 in Pathways.
- Study the advanced roles in the RDG Meetings program and begin volunteering for them.
- From here on, you'll rely less on your mentor to do your monthly projects, but it's always an option. Complete your sixth project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
8. Month 8
Time to keep moving toward Level 3.
- Continue to volunteer for intermediate & advanced roles at your club.
- Schedule & complete your seventh project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
9. Month 9
Keep going.
- Continue to volunteer for intermediate & advanced roles at your club.
- Schedule & complete your eighth project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
10. Month 10
You're getting closer to Level 3; keep going!
- You should now be competent at filling any meeting roles. Continue to volunteer for roles that you need more practice in.
- Schedule & complete your ninth project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
11. Month 11
You should be able to reach Level 3 in your chosen Pathway this month (unless you have a two-part project).
- Continue to volunteer for roles as needed at your club.
- Schedule & complete your tenth project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- Schedule your next project for next month.
12. Month 12
Congratulations on making it through your first Toastmasters year!
- Continue to volunteer for intermediate & advanced roles at your club.
- Schedule & complete your eleventh project.
- Participate with your committee's monthly meeting.
- You should now be ready to volunteer for an officer role in your club. Study the RDG Leadership program so you can make an informed decision when the next elections come up.
