Description

This is an optional role that some clubs have. Learn how to excel at this role here.

1. What is the Humor / Joke Master?

This role does what it says on the proverbial tin: Delivers a moment of humor or joke.

This is a good role for beginners for clubs that have it; it is not a standard role. Usually this role will be performed near the opening of the meeting, in order to lighten the overall mood. You should select material that is appropriate to the theme of the meeting.

This role will teach you comedy delivery and construction skills.

2. Before & During the Meeting

How to prepare for and execute the Humor Master role.

2.1. Before the Meeting

To help you be ready for the Humor Master role, do the following.

  • Find out the theme of the meeting ahead of time, and search for material related to it.
  • You can always construct your own material.
  • If you use a joke from someone else, make sure you know who it was so you can credit them.
  • Keep your material rated PG-13 or below. Maintain the respectful and professional atmosphere of the club. If you aren't sure, check with your mentor or don't use it.
  • Keep your joke under 2 minutes (3 at maximum).

2.2. During the Meeting

At the meeting, either the presiding officer or the Toastmaster will call on you when it's your turn. Transfer control, pause, then begin. When you are finished, turn toward the presiding officer or Toastmaster and transfer control back to them.

3. Suggestions

  • If you need a last minute joke, The Prairie Home Companion's Pretty Good Joke Book is a good resource.
  • Have a few stock jokes memorized in case the Humor Master slot is unfilled.
  • Try to memorize your material; reading a joke usually leads to less powerful laughs.
